Description
Our CDI units are hand assembled and individually tested by technicians who have specialised in classic Yamaha ignition systems for over a decade. Designed and manufactured in the UK, each unit is built using carefully selected modern components to provide dependable performance while preserving the characteristics of the original system.
Replacement CDI unit for the aluminium Hitachi ignition box marked TIA02-01, Yamaha part number 328-85540-10. The unit mounts directly to the original fixing points and reuses the original rubber dampers (not supplied).
Developed for classic racing, these CDI units are designed to deliver maximum performance. Where possible, we have upgraded component specification beyond the original design. However due to the nature of competition use, products used for racing are supplied without warranty.
Made in England
Used on:
TA125 with Hitachi CDi ignition
TD3 1972-74
TR3 1972-74
TZ250 1972-80 with Hitachi metal box CDi
TZ350 1972-79 with Hitachi metal box CDi
Yamaha matched each ignition system to the engine by timing the stator, rotor and CDI unit as a complete assembly, each assembly was given a 3 digit code. Whenever any of these components are replaced, the ignition timing must be checked and adjusted. This cannot be carried out before dispatch.
For convenience, many race teams build complete, numbered ignition sets (CDI unit, stator and rotor) that have been correctly timed to the engine. Each set can be exchanged quickly by simply aligning the timing marks, having already confirmed and adjusted the timing marks to suit engine and the CDi/rotor/stator set.
A CDI unit is only one part of the ignition system. If replacing the CDI does not cure or significantly alter the fault, the cause almost certainly lies elsewhere. On ignition systems that are more than 20 years old, ageing stators, pick-ups, wiring and connectors are all common sources of faults and should be inspected or replaced as necessary. The windings in these stators are highly specialised, unfortunately many repairs to the classic series TZ stators are found to fall very short of the standards required to ensure they can perform as intended.
Our technicians have specialised in Classic Yamaha TZ ignition systems for over a decade. Drawing on this experience, we have produced a comprehensive troubleshooting and inspection guide describing the work required to restore these high performance ignition systems to the standard expected when new.
