Description

Special Edition with improved ND Style case

The Rotax 348, 504, 560 and 604 are members of a closely related family of air-cooled four-stroke single-cylinder engines used by numerous European motorcycle manufacturers from the 1980s onwards. Applications ranged from Aprilia and KTM trail motorcycles to the Armstrong and Harley-Davidson military machines and later CCM competition and supermoto models.

Many of these engines use the same Nippon Denso electronic ignition system, with an external ignition amplifier identified by numbers 070000-0780 or 070000-0781. The Rotax reference for this unit is 264 740.

Rex’s replacement unit is designed specifically as a direct replacement for this ignition amplifier. Always check the number printed on the original ignition unit before ordering.

Check your Rotax has a Nippon Denso (ND) ignition box with the numbers quoted before ordering.

A new CDi unit is only one part of the ignition system, so if a brand new ‘plug-in’ CDi unit does not fix, or changes the symptoms then your next action is to consider other parts in the system that may need to be replaced or repaired to clear the problem, especially where that system is over 20 years old.  You can be sure that the issue will be found in an old part you have not yet replaced.

Our technicians have worked with, studied and manufactured ignition systems for over a decade and now we have published a guide detailing how to troubleshoot and overhaul ageing CDi ignitions that no longer work as they should. This publication is available free of charge on our technical support page.
